The dynamic development of the Ukrainian raspberry market
In recent years we have been observing the dynamic development of the Ukrainian raspberry market. There is growing interest in establishing new plantations, especially in large areas.
According to FAO data, raspberry harvest in Ukraine in 2016 amounted to nearly 32 thousand. t and were 40% higher than those obtained 10 years ago. In 2016, Ukraine was the sixth largest producer of raspberries in the world with a market share of 4%. It ranked behind Russia (21%), the United States (17%), Poland (16%), Mexico (14%) and Serbia (8%). According to Ukrainian organizations, in 2017 raspberry harvest in Ukraine amounted to 65 thousand. tone. With the development of production, the importance of Ukraine in global raspberry trade is growing. The information provided by experts shows that in 2016 Ukraine became one of the largest global exporters of raspberries, occupying the seventh position in the world and the fourth in Europe in terms of net exports. What's more, among the 10 largest exporters in 2016, Ukraine was the only country that increased sales to foreign markets. In recent years, a rapid growth in exports of frozen raspberries has also been observed. However, its dynamics was lower than in the case of fresh raspberries. It is worth noting that more than half of frozen raspberries sent from Ukraine to the European Union goes to Poland. However, there are a number of challenges ahead of Ukrainian fruit producers. These include still quite low level of production technology, uneven quality of raspberries and a large number of varieties, lack of knowledge and experience on international markets and difficulties in accessing financing. However, FAO experts believe that thanks to the recent transfer of knowledge, the outlook for the raspberry sector is good. In the years 2015-2017, several producer associations were established. Magazines are published and internet portals devoted to raspberry growing technology are being run. Seminars, conferences and trainings are organized in all major farming regions. This allows growers to use the experience of other leading countries
